Free Software

Posted by kidray76 Dec. 12, 2007 @ 11:08 AM EST

Figured to do a page dedicated to all the free software alternatives that are commonly asked on newgrounds. Feel free to add suggestions to whatever.

CCleaner -- Best way to clean all temp files, cookies, history, and trash can. Also, best way to unistall programs rather than the conventional microsoft way. Easy to use, just press one button and takes no more than a minute or two for it to completely run. A must have for all personal computers.

Avast -- In my opinion, one of the best anti viruses around. Not a big resource hog and great for personal desktops and laptops. Prevents alot of viruses, trojans, and anti virus viruses from entering your computer. Get this, and you'll never have to worry about driver cleaner hitting you. Interface is easy to use. However, thorough scans could take up to hour or two depending how big the drive your scanning. 10 gb hardrive takes about hour or so for a full scan. There different levels of scans that you can utilize depending on the amount of actiivity you do on your comp.

McAfee Stinger -- Get this if all other virus software fails. It removes al the common, specific viruses. This is not a substitute for a full anti virus application. Just mostly like a companion for extra protection.

Spy Bot Search and Destroy -- Free spy and adware removal tool.

Ad-Aware Scans ram, registry, hard drive for adware. Allows more effecient surfing on the WEB.

HiJackThis -- Last defense against virus problems. To use this, it runs a scan and gives you a log. Then, you will need to post that log to someone who knows what to delete. This is next to last defense against problems and must be used in safe mode to be the most effective.

Open Office -- Best alternative to microsoft suite. Includes a writer, database, powerpoint, excel and other programs that are compatible with microsoft suite. So, you can type up a paper in this, and save it as a .doc extension to work on it there as well. I'm my opinion, better than suite except for the draw program. So, if your a student with a computer, and don't want to spend a hundred or so for word, then get this and be happy. Downside, the draw program is not nearly as good as visio. So for all you networking/business people, gotta get the original.

LiveSwf -- Free flash making program. However, very crappy compared to adobe flash.

AnimatorDV -- Free stop-motion program used for clay animations. Need converter in order to submit to newgrounds.

Gimp -- Free alternative to adobe photoshop. Sorry, not an artist, so can't go into details but get this and add ons if you want to do photoshops.

Paint.NET -- Another free alternative to photoshop.

Inkscape -- A free alternative to adobe illustrator. Very useful for vector graphics and normal capabilities with the genuine.

Easytoon -- Nice program for making black and white .gif animations. Program is easy and products look really good comparitively.

Pivot -- Used for making crappy .gif stick animations. Upside, easy to use.

CamStudio -- Screen and audio recording software that exports into avi.

Copernicus -- For MAC Userss, this is screen capturing. Better at doing it rather than just "Print Screen" and can do multiple shots quickly and save them just as fast.

Speakonia -- Used commonly by clock members. This is a text to speech software. Easy to use, with different voice. Has to be registered before use, but is simple to do.

Linux -- Tired of windows? Don't want to buy a mac? Get linux for an operating system. Upside, not many viruses due to not used comparitively, downside, can't find alot of software compatible that isn't free ware. So flash is out of the question.

VM Player If you want to run another operating system, without having to partition or install on the hardrive, get this. What it does it runs a virtual machine and will mimick having that operating system. All you need is an iso image and your in business. Used alot by business running a server right on a desktop.

Divx -- One of the best video players. It can most video file types and a converter. Also play some dvds or be a burner if you have a divx player.

Jcreator -- Simple application to make java programs/applets/applications. Very simple, easy to use comparitively. Requires updated JVM to run which will be given if needed.

Nice list. But you forgot

Easytoon - looks like flash, but is based on pixels and has only two colours. Though it looks nicer when animating with it than just flash.

Anyway, I downloaded GIMP. Thanks.

Q: Let's say that I posted a couple of pics of harlequin fetus and goatse in some news topics which mods NEVER check. What will you do? I mean what WOULD you do since I didn't do it a month ago.

Dec. 13, 2007 | 11:19 AM kidray76 responds:

I forgot about all that. Gonna add that in along with swflive.

As for your question? I would probably ask another mod to see if that is allowed. I really don't know since there isn't a set rules for userpage outside of Tom's news post about porn.

Dec. 13, 2007 | 1:28 PM Mechabloby says:

'If your gonna get a 360 and buy a mic, go for the full package and save some money. Might as well get a hard drive so you can some old xbox games with that.

Of coruse,, be prepared to have some microsoft points to buy the halo 3 update if it doesn't come with it already when you buy the game.'
-------------

Will do, will do and will do. I've got it all planned out so I won't have to worry and neither shall others. :P
And I don't need your silly free software crap because I had the money to pay for swift 3d, photoshop and flash MX educational. (then I paid for Flash 8 professional so a-ha, ha, ha.) :D

Dec. 13, 2007 | 2:11 PM kidray76 responds:

Pretty much art and flash, gotta get the paid programs because free ware doesn't come close. However, the other things I'm going to include are just as good or equal than its pay to have counter parts.

Good example is open office and avast, in my opinion are better than paid ones.

Brawl gonna be out, so get me on Halo 3 early :P

Dec. 14, 2007 | 12:34 PM Mechabloby says:

Brawl? Is that the new mario game? It looks shite. :D

Dec. 14, 2007 | 1:10 PM kidray76 responds:

Smash brothers brawl. Gonna be a must have for the wii. Check out the update thread in the general. Fucking awesome.

Dec. 14, 2007 | 2:29 PM Lorkas says:

Thanks

Dec. 16, 2007 | 11:17 AM kidray76 responds:

Send pm if need help.

Dec. 14, 2007 | 3:23 PM Mechabloby says:

The thing is, I've never really liked the games for wii. The 360 games interest me much more. :(
I'll still play you on the 360 though. What games do you have for it, anyways? :o

Dec. 15, 2007 | 12:21 AM kidray76 responds:

Halo 3, gears of war, command and conquer, perfect dark.

Pretty much just on halo 3 now. Don't really play the other games since I suck at gwar, and perfect dark is just horrible.

Dec. 15, 2007 | 6:09 PM BoMToons says:

Don't forget Inskscape, it's the free adobe Illustrator.

Dec. 16, 2007 | 11:13 AM kidray76 responds:

Thx, adding now. Never heard of this, gonna download and add to this list now.

Dec. 16, 2007 | 4:41 AM Mechabloby says:

Why not get Guitar Hero 2 and 3? They're great fun. :P

And that Kayne and Lynch looks worthy of buying too. :)

Dec. 16, 2007 | 11:17 AM kidray76 responds:

I'll probably get guitar hero three. And kayne and lynch does look good, just call of duty 4 gettin most of the spot light.

Dec. 16, 2007 | 10:35 PM Sir-Nuts says:

I discovered lately Gimp. It's a great program, I use it mostly for making icons to the Icon Helpers page.

Another free software is LiveSwif. It's for making Flash, search for it and you'll find it.

Dec. 17, 2007 | 2:09 PM kidray76 responds:

Yeah, trying to find the latest version and not the one at www.downloads.com

Dec. 17, 2007 | 11:05 AM aldlv says:

ohh... all those link was very interesting
thnx

Dec. 17, 2007 | 2:11 PM kidray76 responds:

Adding more as I get the time. Debating whather I shoudl extened to websites also.

Dec. 17, 2007 | 1:57 PM Mechabloby says:

I've never liked war games. We don't need anymore of them unless if they are about the iraqi war. That'd be more fun playing in than WW1 or WW2 because we know everything about that. =/

Also, guitar hero 3 is meant to be a better challenge than the other GH games so good choice. :)

Dec. 17, 2007 | 2:11 PM kidray76 responds:

Man, you should of see all the war games on the original xbox. For a while, thats all I saw for the longests in fps. Just never been into those since more strategy rather than out right skill.

Dec. 18, 2007 | 5:55 AM zombably says:

sorry about the review with blam 3 times in it i guess i didnt see that in the faq about reveiws

Dec. 18, 2007 | 9:14 AM kidray76 responds:

It's ok, it happens. Live and learn.

Dec. 19, 2007 | 10:23 AM Spectacle says:

You spelt linux wrong twice.

I might get Avast. I'm currently using Antivir personal edition, but Avast sounds better

Dec. 19, 2007 | 10:52 AM kidray76 responds:

Thx, didn't notice that but I made the changes now. As for antivir, haven't read bad reviews from this, but at the same time, insn't the most recommeded. The edition can have the potential to lack protection against spy and ad ware. Which you can just find spy bot search and destroy and adware remover tools free.

So, if your happy with antivir and you have a firewall somewhere, you might be find with just that. Honestly, I would say avast is a step above antivir because of the firewall. Of course, u can get that always for free through a router or windows firewall.

Dec. 19, 2007 | 11:49 AM Mechabloby says:

I'd rather not. The only true war game I've liked is the classic Medal Of Honour for PS1. It was a great laugh when you unlocked all the characters. (Winston Churchill, Satan, A dinosaur, a cookie jar guy, the statue of liberty) Yeah, I used cheats. o:

Ah, good times...

Dec. 20, 2007 | 9:23 AM kidray76 responds:

Btw, go ahead and get a charge station for your xbox remote. Save you alot of time and money. I think I went through like 6 batteries in one night with halo 3.

Yeah, not a huge fan of war games, think the only war game I have is first flight (I think, sucks really bad, i'll probably edit this posts once I get the name)

Dec. 20, 2007 | 1:04 PM Mechabloby says:

Charge station? :s

I don't know what one is. :(

Explain pls.

Dec. 20, 2007 | 1:40 PM kidray76 responds:

YOur wireless xbox remote. The remote has to get power from somewhere, either two double a batteries, or a rechargeable port. You'll quickly go through double A batteries while playing for a long time, so it is best to just give up 20 dollars to charge the rechargeable battery back from the xbox power supply. That way, you can always have a controller ready. I'll pm you what I'm talking about, posting a link where will just ge tcut off.

Dec. 21, 2007 | 9:43 AM Mechabloby says:

I don't need one if I already have two controllers though. o:
Unless if you're talking about the DVD remote you can get for your xbox to play dvds.... :s

Dec. 26, 2007 | 11:30 AM kidray76 responds:

Psst, only thing played on my xbox is games.

Dec. 21, 2007 | 11:54 AM kidray76 responds:

Nice find for that user page, I might link his page or use some of those same softwares.

Adding soon as I get my halo 3 thread straight.

Dec. 21, 2007 | 12:27 PM Goonie says:

You should add audacity to your list.

Dec. 27, 2007 | 10:32 AM Mechabloby says:

You don't even save CDS onto it's hard drive? o:

http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view /417267 - that is what will happen if we played on halo3 btw.

Dec. 27, 2007 | 8:29 PM jonthomson says:

Nice post. Covers most bases.

Dec. 29, 2007 | 12:49 AM kidray76 responds:

Thx, going to extended, just lack of time. Plus debating wether some freewares are allowed to be link in profiles ie emulators and decompilers. Gonna ask first since techincally the software itself isn't illegal.

Dec. 28, 2007 | 1:29 PM sirtom93 says:

and compilers. devc++ and errrm notepad++.

Jan. 9, 2008 | 2:05 PM kidray76 responds:

Jan. 9, 2008 | 2:05 PM kidray76 responds:

Jan. 9, 2008 | 11:28 AM Lorkas says:

Haven't been here for a while. How was your day?

Jan. 9, 2008 | 2:05 PM kidray76 responds:

Good, at work and learning ASP. Net for class. Going to update with some project management software later. After an hour of looking, finally found a free ware program that you can make gantt charts with. I'll update tonight.

Jan. 9, 2008 | 12:08 PM Kurt-1 says:

You try WAY too hard to become a BBS mod.

Jan. 9, 2008 | 2:04 PM kidray76 responds:

Jealous that I'm at least a review mod and you'll probably never be nothing? In any event, this has nothing to do with this blog post so ban.

lol, Used to be wtfClock? How sad, a former wannabe clock crew imitator.

Jan. 16, 2008 | 11:48 AM Sidorio says:

I'm downloading the movie one just to compare to flash, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Jan. 16, 2008 | 1:22 PM kidray76 responds:

liveswf or animator dv? The second is stop motion, so hard to compare the two since used differently. As for the liveswf, it sucks compared to flash. Hands down. But, it's free though.

Jan. 17, 2008 | 1:28 PM Goonie says:

When your on Halo 3, contact me. I found something incredible.

Jan. 17, 2008 | 4:16 PM kidray76 responds:
